Produced in 1861, the first year of production and subsequently embellished in the 20th Century. Brass bead front and hammer notch rear sights, with the one line "NEW-YORK" address on top of the barrel, "COLTS/PATENT" on the frame, and the 1850 patent date marking in the cylinder flute. Matching numbers, with the punched dot mark denoting revolvers meant to receive special finish, polish and engraving. Deluxe scroll engraving with lined background, 80% coverage, with a patriotic shield motif on the back strap, blank ribbons on either side of the barrel and a wolf's head design on the hammer. The custom engraver is unknown, as the pattern deviates from Gustave Young's punch-dot style backgrounds, while having greater detail than Colt's later vine-style factory scrollwork.
BBL: 4 1/2 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 36 percussion
Finish: blue/silver
Grips: ivory
Serial Number: 2855
Condition: Good as custom embellished, showing an even, silver-gray patina overall, with some traces of pitting, battering of the safety pins and scattered handling marks. Traces of dark, finely aged original silver remain in the protected areas of the grip straps, strongest around the trigger, with a bright brass patina overall. Grips are very good, with age stress cracking and slight shrinkage, along with an attractive yellowed color which emphasizes the grain. Mechanically needs minor adjustment.
