Fine to excellent original condition Smith & Wesson No. 1, .31 caliber iron frame Volcanic cartridge pistol, serial number E61 from the Dr. Stephen Rutter collection who co-authored the book entitled “Volcanic Firearms, Predecessor to theWinchester Rifle”. Many advanced collectors feel that this Smith & Wesson iron frame volcanic may be the best condition example extant. The barrel retains 95% plus original finish with super crisp edges and the original bright polish around ringand at the muzzle. The frame shows 50% plus bright original blue that is thinning at the edges with super crisp engraving and detail. The varnished rosewood grips are excellent with just miniscule handling. The hammer shows 50% plus original casehardening and is toning very slightly. The lever shows considerable bright original blue as the does the rear sight and other small parts. The interior is excellent and all original parts are retained. A strong 9.5+ on a 1 to 10 scale and weknow of only one other comparable example in this near mint state. Est.: $40,000-$80,000
