Fine and elaborate presentation sword by Tiffany and Company of New York inscribed on scabbard, “Presented to Capt. John F. Rottman by the members of the New York Shutzen Corps, June 29th , 1872”. The sword shows an elaborate hilt with figure of reclining liberty, globe of the world, stars, arms and foliate branches intertwined. The pommel is capped with a bust of lady liberty. The grip is cast silver that is pebble grained to resemble sharkskin and then wrapped with gold wire. The scabbard is fitted with mounts in high relief with stands of arms, cannons, flags and the drag shows a union shield with the figure of a soldier in high relief holding a pistol and wearing a Hardee hat. The scabbard is also hand engraved and the mounts are gold gilted, the scabbard is nickel plated. The blade is finally ornamented and gold gilted with advertisement “Warranted to cut wrought iron” with a beautiful Damascus pattern and fine etching. The etching shows stands of arms and romantic ancient motifs and the reverse of the blade is marked Tiffany and Company New York. The condition is fine to near excellent and this sword was probably in stock after the Civil War and presented to a favored Captain by his friends in the Shooting corps who were probably military marksmen.
