This is an excellent example of a Volcanic No. 1 pocket pistol manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co., somewhere between 1857 and 1860. The New Haven Arms Co., manufactured only an estimated 225 No. 1 pocket pistols with 6 inch barrels. The pistol has a blued octagon barrel with integral magazine, brass pocket pistol-size receiver, casehardened hammer, blued loading lever with finger hole and varnished, two-piece walnut grips. The barrel has an iron front sight and the receiver has a dovetail mounted fixed rear sight. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the abbreviated one-line markings introduced by Oliver Winchester in April 1857: "NEWHAVEN CONN. PATENT FEB. 14.1854". The serial number "484", is stamped on the lower left side of the frame below the grip and on the inside of both grips. All of the visible serial numbers match.

The receiver is in fine condition with tight side plate joints and minimal handling wear. The hammer and loading lever have a dark brown patina. The grips are in very good plus with 80% of the original piano finish varnish remains intact and the grips have scattered minor handling marks. The barrel markings and serial numbers are sharp. This is a fine example of a very scarce, limited production long barrel, New Haven Arms Volcanic No. 1 pocket pistol.
