Fine U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1871 Army Rolling Block Rifle
This is a fine representative example of a U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1871 Rolling Block Rifle, as made on a royalty agreement with Remington in 1871 and 1872 with a total production of 10,000. The left side of the frame is marked "MODEL 1871, the right side with the eagle shield motif over "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / 1872" and the upper tang is marked with two line address/patent dates. The rifle is finished armory bright with a casehardened action. Square base front sight and adjustable folding leaf rear sight graduated to 900 yards. The rifle is fitted with a double stop cleaning rod with slotted tip, sling swivel mounted on the front of the trigger guard and a split swivel on the forward sling swivel. The rifle is mounted with a smooth full forearm with iron end cap and straight grip stock with a sharp "ESA" oval cartouche on the left wrist and carbine style buttplate marked "U.S." on the tang.
BBL: 36 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 50-70 U.S. Govt
Finish: bright/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: NSN
Condition: Very fine. The barrel is mostly an arsenal bright finish with some speckled discoloration. The ramrod and barrel bands retain almost all of the original bright finish. The receiver shows traces of original case colors with much of the original casehardening pattern overall and a dull gray patina on the balance. The wood is also very fine with a few minor pressured dents, a small minor gouge on the bottom of the stock, an unknown residue on the bottom of the forearm and scattered minor dings and dents. The markings remain clear and crisp, the stock cartouche is sharp and the action is excellent.
