Fine Panel Scene Engraved Ball & Williams Ballard Deluxe Sporting Rifle

Manufactured from 1862 to 1865. The left side of the receiver is marked "BALL & WILLIAMS/WORCESTER MASS" and "MERWIN & BRAY. AGT/NEW YORK" (traces only). The right side of the receiver is clearly marked "BALLARD'S PATENT/NOV. 5 1861". The receiver also has a factory scroll engraving (possibly Nimschke or his shop) which features a game panel scene on the left side. The barrel is numbered to the gun and has a pin front sight with an empty dovetail scope/sight slot behind the front sight and a corresponding second empty slot towards the breech. The hammer has the 1864 patent date. The rifle also has a tang peep sight with two tapped holes behind the sight. The straight grip stock has course checkering, a brass forend tip and crescent buttplate.

Fine. The barrel retains 30% of the faded original blue finish present with a smooth brown patina on the balance with a large area of moderate to deep pitting present on left side of barrel. The receiver, lever, hammer, breech block and buttplate retain traces of case colors. The wood is fine with some chipping around the extractor and some minor handling marks. Mechanically fine.
