This fine original Henry lever-action rifle was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co., in May, 1865. The rifle has the distinctive brass receiver and buttplate, and octagon barrel with integral 15-shot magazine. The barrel/magazine have a blue finish, the hammer and loading lever are color casehardened and the straight grain walnut stock is oil finished. The barrel has the late style square-back nickel-silver front sight and folding leaf rear sight with 900 yard center notch and elevator bar stop screw. The brass receiver lacks the alternate rear sight dovetail found on Henry rifles below serial number 3,000. The left side of the barrel has the standard screw-fastened sling loop and the left side of the stock has a factory fitted sling swivel. The brass buttplate is the late pattern with pointed heel. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the late-pattern two-line legend "HENRY'S PAT. OCT.16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS.CO.NEWHAVEN.CT" ahead of the rear sight. The serial number, "9743" is stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The serial number is stamped on the left side of the lower receiver rail, in the upper tang inlet of the stock and on the inside of the buttplate below the lower screw hole. The buttplate and tang screws are the later cap-head pattern which are correctly not stamped with the rifle serial number. The lower receiver tang is stamped with the "H" inspection mark of B. Tyler Henry.
