Fine London Barbar Marked Brass Barreled Blunderbus with Snap Bayonet
Establishing himself in London circa 1688, Louis (aka Lewis) Barbar was an expatriate French Huguenot who would later become armorer to the Kings George I and II, with his work continued by his son, James Barbar, following Louis' death in 1741. Cannon style muzzle, with "Barber London" on the top flat, a pair of crossed scepter proofs on the upper left, light engraving around the breech and a 10 3/4" triangular spike bayonet with spring loaded hinge and a sliding latch on the tang. The lock and hammer are lightly border engraved, with "Barbar" ahead of the hammer, floral engraving on the trigger guard, and an engraved and pierced-through brass reverse plate. Smooth stock, with horn and screw tips on the ramrod, straight wrist, and a flat brass buttplate with engraved flags and drum on the heel. Overall length is 29 1/2 inches.

Condition: Fine. The brass components show a fine aged color, darker in the low areas, with a crack and a bend in the rear of the triggerguard. Stock is also fine, with a few cracks, pressure dents and scuffs. Mechanically fine including the snap bayonet.
