Manufactured circa 1843 to 1845 by N.P. Ames of Springfield, Massachusetts. with a total production of about 4,250. The lock is marked "WM JENKS" at the rear and "N.P. AMES/SPRINGFIELD/MASS" behind the hammer, and "WM JENKS" followed by "USN/RP/P/1845" on top of the breech end of the barrel. The underside of the trigger guard and the rear on the plate are stamped with a small "P". The front sight is integral to the front barrel band and the rear sight is a groove on top of the breechblock. Brass barrel bands, trigger guard and buttplate with a sling ring mounted on the rear of the trigger guard plate. Brown barrel, casehardened breech, block and frame, and polished brass mountings. Mounted with a smooth full walnut straight grip stock with a boxed "RP" and "JL" cartouches.

Condition: Very fine. The barrel retains 95% of the original brown finish with some minor pitting on the muzzle and a few dings and scratches. The breech block shows 70% of the original case colors mixed with smooth brown patina, and the lock retains 80% of the original casehardening. The brass components remain bright for the most part, beginning to darken slightly with age. The stock has been lightly sanded and revarnished with six small filled holes on the right side forearm area and two on right buttstock, and overall only a few minor dings and scratches. The cartouches are faint, the other markings are crisp and clear, and the action is excellent.
