This is an example of a late Civil War production Burnside Carbine with the noticeable guide screw in the center of the right frame that allows smoother operation of the breech as it rides in the corresponding curved groove in the breech block. Two leaf rear sight graduated to 500 yards with barrel marked "CAST-STEEL 1864" in front of the rear sight. Top of the receiver has the two line 1856 patent date and the lock plate is marked "BURNSIDE RIFLE Co./PROVIDENCE=R.I." Single letter Ordnance inspection marks are stamped on most components and the script initials of the ordnance Sub-Inspector and Final Inspector are stamped on the left side of the stock wrist. Consignor notes state that this carbine was once the property of the Harold's Club Gun Museum, Reno, Nevada.
