Manufactured by Richardson & Overman with approximately 5,000 produced in Spencer 56-52 caliber. The carbine has a 22-1/4 inch blued barrel and casehardened frame, hammer, lever, buttplate and patch box. The stock is oil-finished black walnut. The lock has the two-line Gallager patent marking and the three-line Richardson & Overman marking over the serial number. Pinched blade and two leaf sights, with a saddle ring bar and ring mounted on the left stock wrist. The left stock wrist is stamped with a clear "WHB" cartouche. The Gallager was an important Federal cavalry carbine that was widely issued and used extensively throughout the Civil War. At least half of these carbines were bought by France for the Franco-Prussian War.

Condition: Very fine. The barrel retains 80% plus original blue finish showing some thinning to a brown. The remaining metal surfaces retain 70% original case colors. The stock is excellent with some minor dings, scratches, and pressure marks. Mechanically excellent.
