Born and raised in Nebraska, Martha Pettigrew is a sculptor of Indian figures and animals. She has a B.F.A. degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and several years experience as a scientific illustrator for the Nebraska State Museum. In 1978, she married Delmar Pettigrew and set aside her art career to raise thoroughbred horses with him. After twelve years, they lost their business but recouped with the success of her resumed art career--as a sculptor. She studied in Colorado with Fritz White and read books on Henry Moore, Isamu Noguchi, and Francisco Zuniga. Many of her subjects depict Plains and Southwest Indians, an interest stemming from her exposure at the State Museum. -askART
