Fine 1887 Production U.S. David F. Clark Inspected Colt Single Action Army Cavalry Revolver

Manufactured in 1887. The top of the barrel is marked with the one line address and the left side of the frame is marked with the three line, three patent dates followed by "U.S." There are small "D.F.C." sub-inspection stamps located on the underside of the barrel, the bottom of the frame and the side of the cylinder. A "P" proofmark is stamped on the underside of the barrel in front of the sub-inspection mark and on the side of the cylinder. Colt "O", "G" and "J" inspection marks are stamped on the underside of the barrel behind the ejector housing stud. Colt "S" and "O" inspection marks are stamped on the rear face of the cylinder between the chambers. "O" is stamped in the hammer well above the firing pin hole. The complete matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap with the partial serial number "9442" on the underside of the barrel and on the cylinder. The loading gate is marked with the assembly number "492". The frame and hammer are casehardened and the remaining parts are blue. Fitted with a smooth one-piece walnut grip with "1867" over a "JBG" cartouche on the left side and a boxed "D.F.C." on the right side.

Very fine. The revolver retains 85% plus of the original blue finish showing some minor holster wear at the muzzle along with the front edge and right side of the ejector housing. The factory feathered polishing marks are clearly visible on either side of the front sight blade and above the ejector housing stud. The cylinder shows some edge wear, thinning, and minor turn marks. The grip straps have a smooth gray patina. The contact portions of the grip strap and back strap have a smooth gray patina with strong original blue on the butt and upper back strap. 60% plus of the vivid case colors remain on the frame with wear being limited to some silvering on the recoil shield. The sides of the hammer have nearly all the casehardened finish remaining with the top and the loading gate having faded to a silver patina. The frame screws retain most of the niter blue finish. The grip remains fine with a clear 1887 date and Ordnance inspection marks showing some dings on the butt. The markings are sharp. The action is tight and functions perfectly. This is a fine example of a "DFC" sub-inspected Colt Single Action Army Cavalry revolver.
