Fascinating out-of-the-family Mauser Model 98 bolt-action rifle, #9117 and bayonet, scabbard and leather hanger with “bring back” papers dated May 28, 1945, in cosmoline, wrapping paper and original shipping box sent home from Germany at the end of the war by an American GI; one of two sent home by First Lt. Jack Fairchild to his brother Willis Fairchild of Gardena, CA. The family reports this gun and the previous lot were found byLt. Fairchild in a boxcar in Germany and was sent home UNOPENED until it was consigned to Little John’s for this auction. We opened it in the presence of the consignor and found the gun and parts to show no nazi inspectionmarkings leading to the assumption that it was one of the last ditch Mausers to be made for the war effort that ended before they could be inspected and supplied to troops. We will assemble the gun for the successfulbuyer; interestingly, the inside lid of the box shows a nazi proof eagle and “FI U.V.”. A great “bring back” with a great history! Est.: $750-$1,500.
