Manufactured in 1917 when the original purchase price was around $50.00. To dismount from the stock, the floor plate release button is pressed which swings the hinged floor plate down. Using the floor plate like a wrench, three turns loosens the front receiver screw nut. Pressure on the snap button in the forearm releases the barrel. Equipped with a beaded blade front sight and two leaf rear sight. The top of the receiver has provisions for mounting a scope. Polished bolt numbered to the gun and double set trigger. Mounted on a nicely figured pistol grip stock featuring checkering on the forearm and grip area, grip cap and smooth buttplate. From 1914 to 1918, Newton Arms Company, under the stewardship of ballistician Charles Newton, manufactured a total of 2,400 high quality rifles. Today these rifle are considered to be some of the best quality sporting rifles manufactured in America. This rifle is featured and profusely illustrated on page 65, 66 and 67 in the book "The Mauser Archive" by Jon Speed, which is included with this lot. The following items are also included with the rifle: Newton hand loading total in original container, Newton cocking piece made for bolt peep sight, three boxes of Newton Arms .256 Newton cartridges (two of which are sealed), contemporary magazine articles related to Newton Arms rifles, three Newton catalogs, and a Newton price list with envelope.

Excellent plus. The rifle retains 98% original blue finish showing some loss at the muzzle and some high edge wear on the buttplate. The stock is also excellent with a few very scattered light handling marks and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. In the opinion of the writer, this is the best Newton Mauser rifle in existence!
