This Factory Engraved Winchester Third Model 1866 Carbine was manufactured in 1871. The carbine has a round barrel and full-length magazine, front barrel band with integral front sight and early style, two leaf, carbine rear sight. A sling ring is mounted on the left side of the receiver. The stock has a an early style brass, crescent buttplate with hinged trap. The barrel, magazine, barrel bands and lever are nickel-plated. The stock and forearm are varnished walnut The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS.NEWHAVEN.CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH.29. 1866.OCTOBER 16.1860" ahead of the rear sight. The serial number, "79791", is stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger. The receiver is decorated with Germanic Scroll engraving on a punch-dot background. The engraving covers the top and bottom of the receiver, and the upper and lower tangs. The left side plate has a novel panel with the Mexican Eagle. The right side plate has an engraved inscription plate. The cartridge elevator is engraved with crossing with dots and double line borders. The edges of the receiver and tang are engraved with wavy line borders and there are double line borders abound the engraving on the sides of the receiver. The top of the buttplate heel is engraved with open scroll work on a punch-dot background with wavy line borders.

Condition: Fine. The barrel, magazine, barrel bands and lever retain 75% of the nickel-plated finish. There is scattered flaking on the barrel, forward barrel band and the bottom of the lever. The hammer retains most of the original casehardened finish. The brass receiver and buttplate have a very attractive, untouched, mustard yellow patina. The engraving is crisp and deep. The side plate joints are tight. The stock and forearm are both in very good condition. Most of the original varnish finish is intact and wear is limited to some very minor handling marks and scattered finish loss on the forearm. This is a fine example of a Factory Engraved Winchester Third Model 1866 Carbine.
