Factory Engraved Nickel and Gold Plated Merwin Hulbert & Co. Large Frame Pocket Army Double Action Revolver with Ivory Grips

This is an example of a Merwin Hulbert & Co. large frame, double action revolver with top strap, round barrel, fluted cylinder and bird's head butt that was manufactured in the 1880s. The revolver has a nickel plated finish with gold plated cylinder and color casehardened hammer, trigger and trigger guard. The two-piece grips are smooth ivory. The barrel has an integral half-moon front sight and the top strap has a sighting groove. The revolver has an extensive Merwin Hulbert & Co. scroll and checkered board engraving with the left side plate having a unique panel scene engraved rabbit motif. Note that the checkered board engraving retains some of the blue and yellow highlights. The hammer is marked with the 1885 patent date and has a folding spur. The left side of the barrel has the Hopkins & Allen address/patent date marking. The left side of the frame under the cylinder is marked "CALIBRE/WINCHESTER" followed by "1873" and the right side of the frame is marked "MERWIN HULBERT & CO. N.Y./POCKET ARMY". The serial number "8520" is stamped near the butt, on the rear cylinder face and on the rear barrel lug with assembly number "270".

Excellent. The revolver retains 97% plus unpolished original nickel finish and nearly 97% original gold wash with thinning in the cylinder flutes. The hammer, trigger and trigger guard retain traces of original case colors. The slightly shrunken grips are very fine with some chipping towards the bottoms, a small missing chip and a few hairline stress cracks. The ivory has an attractive color. The engraving is crisp. Mechanically fine.
