Manufactured in 1852, with the distinctive small oval trigger guard, recoil shield without capping groove, thin barrel lug and beveled loading lever cutout. German silver cone rifle style and dovetail front and hammer notch rear sights, with the one line New York address on top of the barrel "COLTS/ PATENT", on the side of the frame. Late Hartford-style scroll engraving is present with "B" grade coverage, with punch dot backgrounds, checkerboard designs on the frame, Texas Navy scene on the cylinder, a flared pattern on top of the back strap, and a dog head hammer. Matching numbers, with the barrel, frame, and grip straps showing the factory center punch used to mark arms meant for special finishing, with "2" above the frame number and "2K" on the cylinder. Fitted with a set of smooth one piece ivory grips. With a 20th century case, English-style, in mahogany with royal purple velvet lining, 5 compartments, containing a Union Metallic Cartridge cap tin, "L" shaped nipple wrench/screwdriver, iron "COLT'S/ PATENT" two-cavity mold, an assortment of conical and round bullets, and a copper powder flask embossed with an eagle and shield behind a cannon with crossed American flags on either side.
BBL: 7 1/2 inch octagon
Stock:
Gauge: 36 percussion
Finish: blue/silver
Grips: ivory
Serial Number: 18618
Condition: Very good, showing a mixed blue and gray patina overall with scattered pitting and handling marks. Most of the cylinder scene remains with the engraving overall being sharp. Cylinder pins are gone and a crude sighting groove was added to the hammer during the period of use. 60% of the original silver finish remains on the grip straps, with a fine dark, aged color. Grips are excellent with minimal wear and a few small age cracks. Mechanically good. The case is very good, with light handling marks and wear on the velvet. The flask is battered with screws absent; other accessories are fine. This is an attractive example of a scarce, early production Colt Model 1851 Navy revolver with Hartford-style factory engraving and fantastic ivory grips.
