Factory Documented Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle
Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle with casehardened receiver. The rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum Records Office Fact Sheet. The fact sheet lists the date the rifle was received in the Winchester warehouse as November 26, 1895, and lists the configurations as "rifle, Caliber 40/82" with a round barrel and plain trigger. The rifle has a round barrel with full length magazine and has a varnished walnut stock and forearm with crescent buttplate. The barrel is fitted with a fixed nickel-silver front sight blade and sporting style rear sight. The barrel, magazine, bolt and loading gate are blued. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and buttplate have a color casehardened finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "-MANUFACTURED BY THE- / - WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN.U.S.A.-" in two unequal lines. The caliber designation "40-82 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel ahead of the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped "- MODEL 1886-" and the lower tang is marked with the 1884/1885 patent dates in two lines and the serial number "105040".
BBL: 26 inch
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 40-82 WCF
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 105040
Condition: Very good. The rifle retains more than 85% of the original blue and casehardened finish. Nearly all of the original blue finish is present on the barrel, magazine and bolt with some thinning on the right side of the barrel and magazine. The forearm cap, receiver sides, hammer and loading lever retain most of the vivid case colors. The casehardened finish on the contact points on the top and bottom of the receiver, upper tang and buttplate have a dove-gray patina. The markings are crisp. The bore is bright. The stock and forearm are in very good overall condition. The forearm shows moderate handling wear and the stock has scattered light handling marks. The forearm retains about 50% of the original varnished finish and the stock approximately 85%. This is a very good example of a Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle with the very desirable casehardened receiver.
