Factory Documented Rare Nickel-Plated Winchester Model 1873 Carbine with Factory Letter

This is a exceptional example of a Second Model Winchester 1873 Carbine manufactured in 1880. The carbine has the Second Model screw-fastened dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated edges. The top of the barrel is marked: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 20. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight, "MODEL 1873" is marked on the upper tang in fancy letters and the serial number "48713" is marked in script letters on the lower tang between the lever latch and the tang screw. The barrel has a block mounted front sight located and a First Style non-adjustable two-leaf carbine rear sight. A saddle ring and staple are mounted on the left side of the frame. All nickel finish and mounted with a smooth nicely figured walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a carbine buttplate with compartment containing a three piece cleaning rod. The accompanying Cody letter verifies the "Full Nickel" finish and that it was received in the warehouse on March 27, 1880 and shipped out of the warehouse on May 20, 1886.

Excellent. The carbine retains 85% plus of the untouched original nickel plated finish. The nickel plating shows wear and minor flaking on contact points on the barrel, magazine, bands, frame and lever. The markings are crisp. The wood is excellent retaining most of the varnish and showing only scattered light handling/storage wear. The action is fine. An exceptional example of a scarce full nickel plated Winchester Second Model 1873 Carbine.
