SOLID PEWTER. WOOD BASE, HIGH QUALITY AMERICAN CRAFTSMANSHIP

The sculpture “First Manassas” by Francis Barnum is one of his best-known Civil War battlefield sculptures, created as a limited-edition pewter collectible through Chilmark Fine Pewter. Auction records confirm the piece was issued as a numbered edition and signed by Barnum.

The sculpture is based on the First Battle of Manassas (called First Bull Run in the North), fought on July 21, 1861 near Manassas. This was the first major land battle of the American Civil War and the moment many Americans realized the conflict would not end quickly.

Historically, the battle involved Union troops under General Irvin McDowell attacking Confederate forces commanded by Generals P.G.T. Beauregard and Joseph E. Johnston. Early in the war, many civilians believed the fighting would be brief, and spectators even traveled from Washington to watch the battle. Instead, the fighting became disorganized and extremely violent.

One of the most famous moments of the battle occurred on Henry House Hill, where Confederate General Thomas Jonathan Jackson stood firm against Union attacks and earned the nickname “Stonewall.” The battle also became associated with Colonel Francis Bartow, who was mortally wounded leading Confederate troops in a counterattack.

Barnum’s sculpture usually emphasizes:

chaotic infantry combat,
dramatic movement,
soldiers charging across open ground,
and the confusion of early Civil War warfare.

Like many of his action-oriented works, the sculpture focuses on the emotion and intensity of combat rather than creating an exact recreation of one specific moment.

The historical importance of First Manassas was enormous because it showed:

the war would be long and costly,
both armies were inexperienced,
and modern warfare would bring devastating casualties.

The battle also inspired some of the earliest Civil War memorials. The Bartow Monument at Manassas is considered one of the first battlefield monuments erected during the war itself
