Extremely important Revolutionary war sword belonging to general Israel Putnam and consigned by his direct descendant. This sword was passed from Philip Van Cortlandt (1749 -1831) who served as a Lt. Col. during the Revolutionary war and was eventually promoted to Brigadier General. He had a son, Philip, who married Abigail Jouet, who had a daughter Mary H. Van Cortlandt, who married Albert de Montfredy, who had a son Louis and a daughter Mary, who married Edward Augustus Putnam and became Mary M. Putnam. They had a son Edward Augustus Putnam II (1832-1885) who had a son Hiram Putnam (1856-1926) who had two sons: Edward Augustus Putnam IV (1917-1954) and Paul Robert Putnam (Born 1920). A notarized document which details the provenance and descent of the sword is signed by Paul R. Putnam who received the sword from his grandfather Hiram in 1925 and included is a copy of photograph of him holding the sword as a young man in the 1930s. Mr. Putnam has consigned the sword to this auction as he has no descendants and he wishes it to be cared for and preserved as he has always considered it a National treasure. Physical description; The sword is an 18th century small sword with silver hilt and colichemarde or flared blade of the type that was popular from 1750s through the 1780s. The finely detailed hilt depicts the symbols of art, music, architecture, navigation and stands of arms on the reverse. The blade is decorated with incised inscriptions and decorative motifs. The hilt and grip are in very good condition showing no polishing and have not been rubbed out with original silver wire wrap on the handle. The ferrules have loosened slightly. The blade is in very good untouched condition and the original scabbard is retained with fragmenting and aging with missing its tip and throat. General Israel Putnam is one of the most famous American Revolutionary war generals who rose to 2nd in command of Continental forces only subordinate to General Washington and is most remembered for the famous line “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes” which he is quoted as saying during the Battle of Bunker Hill. In closing we would like to state that this sword is among the most important Revolutionary War arms we have ever seen offered for sale in 44+ years of dealing in historical artifacts. The sword is suitable for a display in any major collection or institution and we believe the provenance is rock solid.
