Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1873
This is an extremely rare and extremely well documented engraved like "1 of 1000" which is featured on page 137 of the book "The Story of the Winchester 1 of 1000 and 1 of 100" by Lewis as well as page 158 of "Winchester Engraving" by Wilson. This rare engraved like a "1 of 1000" is also highly embellished and signed by Winchester Master Engraver John Ulrich. The accompanying factory letter documents that this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on March 22, 1890, and had the following features: 38 caliber, 26-inch, half-octagon barrel, plain trigger, checkered stock, Lyman sights, 1/2 magazine, casehardened receiver, checkered shotgun buttplate, sling and swivel, $15 engraving, blank in rear sight dovetail and "Buckhorn rear sight sent". The rifle has a blue barrel and color casehardened forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and checkered shotgun buttplate. The stock and forearm are highly figured "fancy grain" walnut with a "piano finish". The stock wrist and forearm have Winchester "Style H" checkering. The half-round/half-octagon barrel has a Lyman No. 5 Folding Combination Front Sight with ivory post and a dovetail mounted sporting style buckhorn rear sight. A folding combination rear sight is mounted on the receiver tang. Sling swivels are mounted on the forearm cap and underside of the stock. The unusual and likewise ultra rare "$15 engraving" is executed on the barrel muzzle and top flats, forearm cap, dust cover, side plates, cartridge elevator, bottom and sides of the receiver, upper and lower tang, sides and bottom of the loading lever, sides of the hammer and heel of the buttplate. The engraving appears to be at least the equivalent (quite possibly the same) of the Winchester No. 6 Engraving illustrated in the 1897 edition of Winchester "HIGHLY FINISHED ARMS" and features two highly detailed game scenes: a detailed panther on the right side plate and two deer on the left side plate. The balance of the decoration includes scroll border and ribbon engraving. The bottom tang carries the signature "J. ULRICH". The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A./-KING'S IMPROVEMENT PATENTED.MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860.-" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber "38 W.C.F." is roll-stamped in an engraved panel just ahead of the receiver. "38 CAL" is roll-stamped in script letters on the cartridge elevator surrounded by scroll-work. The serial number "335484B" is located in an engraved banner on the lower receiver tang behind the lever latch.
BBL: 26 inch part octagon
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 38 WCF
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 335484B
Condition:
Fine overall. The rifle retains 60% of the original blue finish with traces of the original casehardened finish. The loading gate retains 40% of the niter blue finish. The case colors on the forearm cap, receiver, lever, hammer, dust cover and buttplate have faded to a silver-gray patina with darker colors in protected areas and silvered finish on contact points. The surfaces of the forearm cap, receiver, hammer and lever are smooth with no pitting. The buttplate has light pitting and contact wear. The fine engraving remains crisp and well defined. The stock and forearm are both in very good condition. The checkered panels have some handling wear and the high polish piano finish has dulled with age. The highly figured fancy grain 4x walnut has only a few very minor handling marks. This is a excellent and equally rare full coverage engraved like "1 of 1000" rifle that would be nearly impossible to find another with this level of embellishment and with such a pedigree.
