Extraordinary Winchester Model 21 Grand American Marked Two-Barrel Shotgun Set
This is an example of a cased Model 21 Winchester, two-barrel Grand American marked shotgun. These Grand American shotguns were the "Piece De Resistance" of the Winchester Model 21's, with each one of them being custom ordered and embellished. This is a mid-production 12 gauge Grand American shotgun (SN27456) that would have originally come out of the custom shop, that could easily be documented via a factory letter (we do not have one at this time, so can not verify). This shotgun has the original Winchester hand polished, high luster blue finish with presentation grade walnut stock and forend with hand cut "Fleur-de-Lies" checkering. The parts on all model 21 shotguns were hand fitted and finished giving them the smoothest action with the best wood to metal fit of any Winchester shotgun produced. As noted, this is a factory cased "two-barrel" set with full factory engraving on the receiver and "five" Winchester factory gold inlays. Both barrels are marked on the underside, "Winchester Proof Steel" with the circled "WP" factory proofmark. Barrel set No. 1 is 30 inches long and is marked on the underside (FULL & FULL) 12 GAUGE/ 2 3/4 inch chambers. Barrel set No. 2 is 28 inches long and is marked on the underside (MOD & IMP CYL) 2 3/4 inch chambers. The shotgun is lavishly engraved with 98% of the overall surfaces of the receiver being engraved in a very nice delicate, almost English style scroll engraving with geometric designs and engraved borders, with the breech ends of the barrel also receiving a duplicate engraved pattern. As noted this specific shotgun has "five" exceptionally well done, Winchester factory gold inlays with a game scene background, and outstanding detail on the actual inlays. The inlays are as follows: the inlay on the right side depicts a Labrador Retriever on point, with the inlay on the left side showing an Irish Setter in a standing position, and the underside of the receiver showing a pair of ring-necked pheasant (rooster and hen) in a field scene. The gold inlay on the trigger guard bow depicts the bust of an Irish Setter. The Gold inlays are all surrounded by a oval or round geometric border pattern. As noted, the shotgun is a Grand American version with a gold plated single trigger, matted, raised ventilated rib with two bead sights, that has been engraved on top of the rib, "CUSTOM BUILT BY WINCHESTER". The water table of the receiver is correctly marked "MADE IN U.S.A./MODEL 21/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN.", with the internal parts having an engine turned burnished finish. As noted, the engraving that covers the shotgun is masterfully done and fully complements the five gold inlays. The inlays themselves are like the engraving, masterfully laid out and executed. The shotgun is fitted with a set of presentation or AAA grade American honey colored walnut stock and forend, both of which are meticulously hand-checkered in "Fleur-de-Lies" with hand stippling or shading around the Fleur's. The forend has a black ebony insert in the tip, the stock itself has an engraved steel grip cap that also has a fine gold line border around the edge with the center section engraved, "GRAND AMERICAN". The lower section of the stock has a blank small brass presentation plaque and the butt is fitted with an English pattern rubber recoil pad. Length of pull approximately 14 3/8". As noted the shotgun has the original deep high polished blued factory finish on all the metal surfaces except for those inside the action and lug areas that have been left in the bright with the engine burnished swirls. This shotgun is housed in a contemporary, "Herkert & Meisel" custom built carrying case with green felt lining. The case has four compartments; two to house each one of the barrels and forend, one to house the shotgun receiver/stock and a single compartment for accessories. A 7 X5 inch non-original Winchester factory style label has been fixed to the inside of the lid.
