This is an excellent example of a late WWII German K98 rifle that was converted into a short side rail sniper rifle, by the Gustloff-Werkes factory. The scope base and mount is the German short side rail type that has the mid-war, style of mount without the additional locking lever on top, that has the three large base screws, three locking screws and two taper pins to secure the base to the side of the rifle. The mount is a correct WWII German style with the single locking lever on the side that is numbered to match the rifle. The scope is a late war unmarked commercial variation that has the correct elevation graduations (100-800 meters) that is marked on top of the windage dial. The only markings on the scope are on the elevation base that is marked "4X81" but it is very similar to the Hensoldt and Zeiss scope issued during WWII. The top of the receiver is marked with a single Eagle 749 proof over "bcd/4" for the manufactures code and year of production. The right side of the receiver has the double firing proof with the single number "1" bcd factory proofmark. The rear of the barrel has only the single Eagle firing proof next to the serial number and the underside has the barrel makers code of "chAd" with a single WaA147 Waffenamt. The rifle has the late war unmarked stamped barrel bands and trigger guard with a milled floor plate. The front of the trigger guard is marked "GERMANY". The stock and handguard are both the late war laminated style that is also unmarked or proofed. The rifle barrel and receiver has the late war "in the white" factory finish with blued barrel bands. The scope mount, base and scope all have a nice wartime blued finish overall.
BBL: 24 inch round
Stock: laminated
Gauge: 7.92 mm Mauser
Finish: phosphate
Grips:
Serial Number: 8367y
Condition: Excellent 99% plus overall with all of the original, in the thin phosphate wartime finish on the rifle as noted above with most of the wartime blued finish on the scope mount, base and scope. The stock and handguard are both in excellent condition with a nice original wartime finish with minimal handling marks overall. The rifle has a completely matching bolt assembly with unnumbered stamped components and scope base with the scope mount numbered and matching to the rifle, with a mismatched floor plate. The scope has excellent optics and the elevation knob works correctly. An excellent example of a late war short side rail sniper.
