Volcanic Lever-Action Carbine manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co., between 1857 and 1860. The carbine has a blued octagon barrel with integral magazine, brass receiver and buttplate and casehardened hammer and lever. The walnut stock has a varnished, ''piano'' finish. The barrel has a nickel-silver front sight blade. The receiver is fitted with a dovetail mounted rear sight with thumb-screw elevator. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "NEWHAVEN CONN. PATENT FEB.14.1854" in a single line. This marking was used on Volcanic carbines and pistols after Oliver Winchester reorganized the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company in April 1857. The serial number "10" is stamped on the left side of the lower receiver tang, on the heel of the stock underneath the buttplate, on the inside of the buttplate and on the shank of each of the hand-fitted tang and buttplate screws. All of the visible serial numbers match. Volcanic carbines and pistols were key elements in the development of U.S. repeating firearms. The Volcanic, self-contained "Rocket-ball" cartridge was one of the very first cartridges to combine the projectile, powder and primer into one unit. The Volcanic integral, spring-loaded magazine and lever-action provided the model for the highly successful Henry and Winchester lever-action rifle designs. Finally the Volcanic repeating Arms Company and it's successor the New Haven Arms Company, launched clothing manufacturer Oliver Winchester's career in firearms manufacturing and were the predecessors to Winchester Repeating Arms Co. Although, the New Haven Arms Co., manufactured fewer than 1000 between 1857 and 1860; these carbines are among the most historically significant U.S. firearms.

Serial Number: 10
Condition: Very fine. The carbine retains 75% plus of the original blue finish on the barrel and magazine. The blue finish has faded slightly to a plum colored patina with some slight edge wear. The balance of the barrel is smooth and the markings are clear. The hammer and loading lever retain approximately 70% of the original deep casehardened finish. The tang and buttplate screws have retain most of their handsome original niter blue finish. The brass receiver and buttplate have a mellow, untouched patina and show minimal handling wear. The receiver and buttplate show only scattered and very minor storage marks. The stock is in very fine condition with nearly all of the high polish varnish remaining showing only storage type pressure marks. This is an exceptional example of a scarce and historically significant New Haven Arms Co., Volcanic, lever-action, carbine in very fine condition.
