Exceptional and Rare Documented Winchester Model 1886 50-100-450 Express Rifle with Factory Letter

Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle chambered for the 50-100-450 Express cartridge. A search record from the Cody Firearms Museum Records Office included with the rifle identifies Model 1886 Rifle serial number 118464 as caliber 50/100/450 with round barrel, and plain trigger. The record shows that this rifle was received in the Winchester warehouse on November 5, 1898, and shipped October 23, 1901. The rifle has a blued 26-inch round barrel and full length magazine. The receiver, forearm cap, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are color case-hardened. The straight grain walnut stock and forearm have a varnish finish. The rifle has a Winchester Express front sight with gold bead and the rare Winchester Express rear sight with short yardage leaves. The three leaves have platinum sight lines and are graduated for 50, 100 or 200 yards. The Express rear sight was standard only on Model 1886 rifles chambered for the 50-100-450 Express cartridge. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the legend: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/- WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A. - " in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation: "50-100-450" is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. "-MODEl 1886-" is roll-stamped on the upper receiver tang. The lower receiver tang is stamped with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates behind the trigger and the serial number "118464" in script numerals behind the rear tang screw. The powerful 50-100-450 Express cartridge was introduced by Winchester for the Model 1886 rifle in 1895 but was not popular with American hunters and was discontinued in 1910. Model 1886 Express Rifles chambered for the 50-100-450 cartridge are extremely rare.

Excellent. The rifle retains 98% of the original blue and 95% plus color casehardened finish. The barrel, magazine and bolt retain nearly all of the factory blue finish. Most of the fiery niter blue finish is present on the loading gate. The case colors on the forearm cap, receiver, hammer and lever are vivid. The case colors on the crescent buttplate have faded slightly but have not silvered. All of the barrel and receiver markings are sharp. The stock and forearm are in excellent overall condition with a few scattered and very minor handling marks. The stock and forearm retain 95% of the original varnish finish. This is an excellent example of a rare and highly desirable Winchester Model 1886 50-100-450 Express Rifle.
