This is an excellent example of a very rare unaltered late 1920 Luger carbine that was manufactured by DWM. These Lugers are fairly rare in this country as they were produced after WWI for commercial sales only on a special order basis. It is estimated that less than 100 1920 style carbines were ever produced with very few actually available in the U.S.. The conversion work for these models was all performed by DWM in Germany, with one or two types of frame; either an earlier 1906 style frame with grip safety, in which a stock lug was welded on to the back of the frame or in a very few cases a newer 1914 style frame was used. This example has the earlier original style 1906 type frame with the welded on stock lug. The front of the frame was also modified by DWM by attaching a hanger on the front to mount the forend. The top of the chamber is unmarked and the rear toggle has the standard DWM markings. The left side of the barrel extension, breech block and barrel all have a single "Crown/N" commercial proof with an additional number (4638) added to the left side of the barrel extension, and the frame rail is stamped "MADE IN GERMANY". The extractor is marked "GELADEN" and the lower safety area has been milled out to remove the old safety markings with the upper area correctly unmarked. The frame is correctly numbered inside the front cutout (119) and then again on the under side of the barrel, the barrel lug and inside the forend. As noted the barrel extension, was numbered (4638) on the left side and the side plate, trigger and take down lever all carry the matching assembly numbers of (38). It is fitted with a ramp front sight and a carbine rear sight was attached to the rear of the barrel by the DWM factory and is graduated 1, 2, 3, (100-300) meters. It has walnut checkered grips with the left grip numbered "119" with the right side being blank. As noted this is a complete carbine rig with an original 1920 style carbine stock with an unnumbered attaching iron with the horn buttplate and sling swivel. It is also fitted with the correct Schnabel tip walnut forend with the coarser checkering on both sides. This beautiful carbine rig is housed in an contemporary walnut storage case brown leather covering with a French fitted interior with red lining. The case holds the original Luger carbine and stock, two spare original wood base magazines, an original cleaning rod, takedown tool stamped "GERMANY", and an original Winchester box of 7.63mm Mauser ammunition.
