This is an exceptional example of a M.30 Luftwaffe Survival Drilling manufactured by J.P. Sauer & Son in 1942. The gun has two 12 gauge side-by-side barrels and a 9.3 x 74R rifled under-barrel. The barrels have a high polish, commercial blue finish. The receiver, trigger guard, pistol grip cap and forearm latch are casehardened with fiery case colors. The European Walnut stock and forearm have a matt varnish finish. The stock pistol grip and the forearm are finely checkered. The stock has a small oval cheek-rest pistol grip with cap and serrated, black plastic buttplate with the J.P. Sauer "SS" logo embossed in the middle. Sling swivels are mounted on the stock and the bottom barrel. The drilling has double set-triggers with the safety on the left stock flat and the barrel selector on the tang. Selection of the rifle barrel elevates a folding rear sight on the sighting rib. The sight is zeroed at 100 meters and marked "100" on the rear face. The raised matted sighting rib is fitted with a gold bead front sight. The receiver, trigger guard, tangs, forearm latch and pistol grip cap are decorated with subtle open scroll engraving. The shotgun barrel breeches have punch-dot engraving on the borders. The caliber of the rifle barrel, "9,3 x 74.R.", is engraved on an oval panel on the sighting rib. "KRUPP-LAUFSTAHL" with bullets on either end of the marking is roll-stamped on the top of the shotgun barrels and the left side of the rifle barrel. The Sauer "SS" logo is engraved on the underside of the receiver and "J.P. SAUER & SOHN, SUHL" is roll-stamped in a single line on both sides of the receiver. A large Luftwaffe Eagle and Swastika insignia is stamped on the lower right side of the stock and on the right shotgun barrel near the breech. A "Stick Eagle/2" Luftwaffe acceptance mark is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug. The shotgun bore: "12/65" and "Eagle/N" proof mark are stamped on the underside of both barrels. The caliber and the "Eagle/N" proof are stamped on the left side of the rifle barrel near the breech. The serial number, "337971" is stamped on the bottom of the rifle barrel, on the top of the receiver edge and engraved on the lower tang. The partial serial number "7971" is stamped on the inside of the forearm latch. All of the serial numbers match. The drilling is complete with a test pattern for both shotgun barrels. The pattern sheet is marked with the drilling serial number "337971" and dated "12 Juni 1942". The drilling is complete with the aluminum transit case and most of the original accessories. The case has a leather, luggage type, handle and two aluminum latches. The case exterior is painted Luftwaffe gray and the lid is stenciled: "Drilling M.30/mit Munition u Zubbehor" in two lines. The case interior is natural aluminum and has wooden blocks and partitions to secure the drilling and accessories. The a list of the case contents is stenciled on the upper left corner of the lid. The case contains the following items: (1) Manual entitled "Drilling M.30" dated "Juni 1941", (2) russet pigskin sling, (3) black cardboard box for cleaning equipment that contains six bore brushes and swabs for the shotgun and rifle barrels, (4) glass oil bottle with green "MAPOX" label, (5) three-piece, wooden, jointed cleaning rod, (6) cotton cleaning material and (7) packet of 10 Sinoxid 8 x 60 hollow-point rifle cartridges.
