Also known as the "Side Lever Hall", Simeon North manufactured approximately 10,500 of these carbines between 1844 and 1855, with only about 900 produced in 1847. The top of the breechblock is marked "U.S. / S.NORTH / MIDLtn / CONN. / 1847", there is a "JH" on the right side of the breech end of the barrel and a sharp boxed "GWH" cartouche on the left stock flat and "WAT" on the right flat. There is a small "H" sub-inspectors mark on some of the components. The carbine has the breechblock thumb lever finished in bright niter blue on the right side of the receiver and extended sling bar and ring on the opposite side. Fixed post and notch sights, iron cleaning rod, casehardened breechblock and brown lacquer on the remaining parts. Mounted with a smooth one-piece full straight grip stock, secured by two barrel bands and smooth flat iron buttplate. The Model 1843 Hall/North Carbine was the last of the Hall carbines and rifles issued by the U.S. Army. Model 1843 Hall carbines were carried by U.S. Dragoons during the Mexican War and continued in service through most of the Civil War, being issued to many cavalry units in Illinois, Missouri and Kansas.
