This is an exceptional example of a U.S. Civil War Remington Model 1863 Zouave Rifle with 1863 dated components. The rear of the lock plate is dated 1863 and ahead of the hammer is the eagle/shield over "U.S." followed by "REMINGTON'S/ILION, N.Y." and a small letter "L". The breech of the barrel is dated 1863 and has "V/P/eagle head" proofs with the left flat stamped "STEEL R.K.A." It has a three folding leaf type rear sight, brass furniture including the patchbox and an iron ramrod. The patchbox is stamped with a small letter "L" and the buttplate tang is marked "US/P". The patchbox contains an extra percussion nipple. The full length stock has two script letter cartouches on the left flat.

Condition: Excellent plus, as issued. The barrel retains 99% original blue finish showing some slight thinning. The lock and hammer retain 98% original case colors. The brass has an attractive patina. The stock is also excellent plus with a few minor pressure dents. Mechanically excellent.
