This is a very rare example of an 1851 production U.S. Model 1841 Mississippi rifle as made by the Whitney Arms Company that was converted into one of the "Long Range" rifles, by having the barrel rebored/rerifled in 58 caliber and adding the long range rear sight. There were approximately 600 of these rifles made in total with very few ever available today. This alteration is very similar to the conversion of the Springfield and Harpers Ferry Model 1841 manufactured rifles. In addition this rare rifle has a later pattern, bayonet lug/barrel ring added. The bayonet lug/ring slides over the barrel and is secured with one large tightening screw on the rifle side with the actual bayonet lug on the left side, that will allow the use of a saber bayonet. Directly over the top of the bayonet lug it is stamped with serial number "8846". This addition is similar to other rifles also modified by various state militias. The barrel is marked "US/J.P.C./P" and dated 1851and the lock is marked "E. WHITNEY/U.S." below the bolster and "N. HAVEN/1851" on the tail of the lock plate. The left side of the stock has a double cartouche of a boxed "JTL" and a circular cartouche of "WAT". This rifle has all brass furniture with the armory brown finish on the barrel with a blued lock plate.

Stock: walnut
Gauge: 58 percussion
Finish: Armory Brown

Serial Number: NSN
Condition: Excellent with 95% of the original Armory Brown finish on the barrel with crisp clear markings with a couple of very minor pitting spots on the top, rear edge of the barrel and on top of the tang. The lock plate retains 90% plus of the original mutted case colors. The brass furniture still retains its original dulled patina brass appearance. The stock is also excellent, with a nice original dark brown stock finish overall with minor handling marks and light pressure dents in a few areas. A truly extraordinary example of a very desirable U.S. Model 1841 Mississippi.
