Exceptional Historically Documented Deluxe John N. Comstock Inscribed Gold/Silver-Plated First Model
Winchester Deluxe First Model 1873 Rifle with 1975 Winchester Gun Museum letter. The letter states: "Winchester Model 1873, serial number 25766, listed as rifle, 26" octagon barrel, 1/2 gold, checked stock, and set trigger. Shipped February 2, 1877, no other information listed". The left side plate is engraved: "John N. Comstock". Information with the rifle, (letters and articles), indicates that John H. Comstock (1829-1888) was a resident of Boscobel, Wisconsin, and that this rifle was purchased from an heir in the 1970s. The rifle has a silver plated octagon barrel and full-length magazine. The forearm cap, receiver, cartridge elevator, dust cover and crescent buttplate are gold plated. The hammer and loading lever have a color casehardened finish. The loading gate, rear sight and tang sight are blued. The stock and forearm are highly figured, "fancy grain" walnut with early style checkered panels and a high polish varnish finish. The rifle barrel has a fixed, nickel-silver, front sight and early style, 2 1/2-inch, sporting style rear sight. A folding peep sight is mounted on the receiver tang (this early style sight is rarely seen on Model 1873 Rifles and is illustrated on page 322 of "WINCHSTER'S NEW MODEL OF 1873, A TRIBUTE" by James Gordon). The rifle is fitted with a single set-trigger. The first model receiver has grooved dust cover guides and checkered oval finger grip in the dust cover. The buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor and the trap contains a four-piece, jointed, steel cleaning rod. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S - IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16.1860." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The serial number, "25766" is located on the lower receiver tang behind the loading lever latch. Included with the rifle are two Winchester Museum letters and information concerning the history of the rifle and John Comstock.

Serial Number: 25766
Condition: Very fine. The rifle shows careful handling; most of the finish wear is concentrated on the delicate silver-plated finish on the barrel and magazine which retain 75% plus of the original slated finish. The rifle retains 80% plus of the gold/silver plated finish. There is light to moderate finish wear on the right side of the receiver ahead of the loading gate and on the lower edge of the receiver near the cartridge elevator. There is some minor edge wear on the side plates and on the top of the receiver. The buttplate retains 30% of the gold plated finish. Nearly all of the casehardened finish is present on the hammer and loading lever and the case colors are vivid. Most of the fire blue finish remains on the loading gate. The fancy grain stock and forearm are in excellent condition. Nearly all of the varnish finish remains intact, the checkering is sharp and handling wear is minimal. The inscription of the left side plate is crisp. The barrel markings are sharp. The bore is in perfect condition. Winchester Model 1873 Rifles with gold and silver plated finishes are rare. This is an exceptional example of a fully documented, deluxe, special order, First Model 1873 Rifle with gold and silver plated finish, checkered, fancy grain stock and forearm, rare early folding peep sight and inscribed receiver.
