Located in Southern Austria, Ferlach has a long and upstanding tradition of producing some of the finest hunting weapons of all types dating back to the 1500s and continues to this day. Ferlach firearms are known to have the perfect balance of quality, beauty, craftsmanship and functionality. Today there are 13 companies making guns. These companies are family groupings and some of the best known of these families and most often encountered in the U.S. having names such as Hauptmann, Winkler and Michelitsch, just to name a few. This particular rifle was made by Johann Fanzoj and features a high ramp blade front sight and fixed "V" notch rear sight mounted on a quarter rib with integral mounting bases. The sides of the front ramp, quarter rib and front scope base are gold inlaid with wire border and the top of the matte rib is gold inlaid "J. FANZOJ - FERLACH - AUSTR." The sides of the front mount base and the rear side of the upper barrel are engraved with oak leaves. There is a sling swivel mounted on the bottom barrel. Mounted on the quarter rib is a Zeiss Diavari-Z 1.5 - 6x42 claw mounted scope with clear lens covers. The action and grip cap are grey and the remaining parts are blue. The action has a Greener style cross bolt, gold cocking indicators and gold action pins. The fences feature relief oak leaf engravings and the action features fine scroll and oak leaf engraving with gold inlaid decorative wire border. The left side has a deep relief engraved wooded scene of two bugling red stag, there are two wild boars in a wooded scene on the right side and a ram on the bottom. The break lever is engraved with fine scroll and oak leaf designs, with skeletonized Ibex. The same engraving design extends to the long upper tang and trigger guard which also have gold inlaid wire bordering. The trigger guard is engraved with the same scroll design with gold inlaid wire border and gold inlaid serial number. The consignor notes state that the engraving was done by Johann deFlorian. Double gold triggers, tang mounted manual safety and mounted with a three piece walnut forearm and pistol grip stock. The bottom of the forearm and the wrist of the stock are relief carved with fish scale and oak leaf designs. The forearm hardware is engraved with fine scroll and oak leaf designs with gold inlaid wire bordering. The grip cap has a compartment and is engraved with a fine scroll design with a gold wire inlaid border around the base. The stock features a cheekpiece, Pachmayr Old English recoil pad and sling swivel. Length of pull is 14 1/2". Drop at comb is 1 1/4" and drop at heel is 2 1/2". Complete with a custom soft pebble grain brown leather covered oak case with brass corner protectors and hardware, leather straps and handle and wine colored lining with gold embossed lack leather label affixed to the inside of the lid which reads "logo / JOHANN FANZOJ / GUNMAKING SINCE 1790 / GRIESGASSE.J FERLACH- AUSTRIA".

Condition: Excellent 99% plus. The rifle retains nearly all of the original blue and grey finish. The wood is excellent with a few very minor dings and handling marks. All of the gold inlay remains. The engraving and carving remains sharp. Mechanically excellent. The scope is as new. The case is excellent plus. A beautiful example of a Johann Fanzoj Ferlach double rifle.
