Exceptional Colt London Model 1849 Pocket Revolver

This is an exceptional original example of a Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolver with London address that was manufactured circa 1856. This Fifth Model revolver has the slightly larger grips, steel back strap and oval trigger guard. The revolver has a four-inch octagon barrel with loading lever and five-shot .31 caliber cylinder. The cylinder is roll-engraved with Stagecoach Holdup scene and "COLTS PATENT" markings. The barrel and cylinder have a high polish blue finish, the loading lever, hammer and frame are color casehardened and the trigger guard and back strap are silver plated. The one-piece walnut grip has a high polish piano finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "{ADDRESS COL: COLT/LONDON}". "COLTS/PATENT" is stamped in two lines on the left side of the frame. London "Crown/V" and "Crown/GP" proof and inspection marks are stamped on the left side of the barrel lug in front of the wedge and above each chamber on the cylinder behind the stops. The full serial number "8554" is stamped on the loading lever, bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap and on the side of the cylinder. Colt's London Armory manufactured approximately 11,000 Model 1849 Pocket revolvers between 1853 and 1856.

Excellent. The revolver retains 95% of the bright original high polish blue and 95% plus fiery case colors. Nearly all of the blue finish is present on the barrel with wear limited to some finish loss on the edges and several shallow dents on the right side of the lug around the wedge slot. The cylinder retains 80% of the blue finish and nearly all of the Stagecoach Holdup scene. All of the cylinder pins remain intact and flash-pitting on the rear face of the cylinder and percussion nipples is minimal. The loading lever, frame and hammer have at least 95% of the vivid case colors and show minimal wear. The trigger guard and back strap retain 80% of the silver plated finish with light tarnish. The grip is excellent with nearly all of the high polish varnish and minimal wear. All of the markings are sharp. The action is tight and functions perfectly. This is both an attractive and excellent original example of a London Model 1849 Pocket Revolver.
