Exceptional Colt 1877  Sheriff's Model  Lightning Double Action Revolver with 3 1/2 Inch Etched Barr
Produced in 1880, this is an exceptional example of an all original, unaltered Colt 1877 Sheriff's Model revolver with a scarce Colt picture carton. The revolver has the all nickel plated finish with the heat blued hammer, action screws and cylinder pin. Fixed blade sights, with the two line Hartford address on top and "COLT. D.A. 38" in an etched oval panel on the left. The left side of the frame has the Colt three-line/three-date patent markings, "271" on the loading gate, matching numbers on the frame and grip straps with matching partial number on the rear cylinder face. Checkered hard rubber birds head grips with Rampant Colt imprints. The pistol has matching serial numbers "24500" on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and backstrap, and the rear of the cylinder is numbered "500". Under the grips, backstrap and trigger guard is the assembly number "4", and the back of the grips have been faintly marked with the pistol serial number "24500". The carton has a maroon body with red printed label, the top left panel depicts the Rampant Colt trademark and the bottom one shows a .38 caliber cartridge. The right panel has a picture of the revolver and is labeled "COLT'S DOUBLE ACTION PISTOL/.38 Caliber", 3 1/2 Inch Barrel". Below that lists the Colt Hartford address. A label glued to the inside of the lid is entitled "DIRECTION" for using COLT'S .38 in. & .41 in. cal. RELOADING TOOLS." The carton has no end label with only some penciled capital letters on the bottom. It is complete with a Colt cleaning brush.

Condition: Excellent plus overall, showing 98% original Colt nickel plated finish. A scratch runs around the cylinder, and some other light handling marks and spotting overall. Bright niter blue components are excellent, with the color particularly bright and fiery on the hammer and trigger. Grips are excellent, with a few tiny pressure dents. The rare picture carton is in good condition, having faded colors overall from age and sun light, while the label on top is 97% intact with minor tears around the edges and rub spots in the center. The left side/corners of the lid show some wear and separation with the paper hinge showing some slight separation from age.
