Estimate: $14000 - 22500
Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle with Cody Firearms Museum letter that states it was shipped from Winchester on October 6, 1894. The letter describes the rifle as .45/90 caliber with octagon barrel and plain trigger. The rifle has the very desirable color casehardened frame and casehardened forearm cap, crescent buttplate, hammer and lever. The 26 inch full-octagon barrel, full length magazine, bolt and loading gate have a blue finish. The straight grain walnut stock and forearm have a varnish finish. The barrel has a dovetail mounted Lyman "Jack Sight" with ivory bead and a sporting rear sight with serrated rear edges, thumb piece and sliding sight notch insert. A Lyman combination rear sight is mounted on the tang. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/- WiNCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "45-90 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. The Winchester 1884 and 1885 patent dates are roll-stamped in two lines on the lower tang behind the trigger and the serial number, "90869" is stamped in script numerals behind the rear tang screw.
BBL: 26 inch octagonal
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 45-90 WCF
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 90869
Condition: Excellent. Nearly 98% of the original blue and color casehardened finish remains intact. Nearly all of the blue finish is present on the barrel, magazine, bolt and loading gate. The case colors on the sides of the frame, upper and lower tang, hammer and forearm cap are strong. The case colors on the top and underside of the frame and sides of the lever show minor handling wear and have traces of silver patina. The case colors on the buttplate have thinned to a mottled silver gray. The stock and forearm are both in excellent condition and retain nearly 95% of the original varnish. The finish on the bottom and right side of the forearm shows very minor handling wear. There are a few very minor handling marks on the left side of the stock and the forearm. The markings on the barrel and frame are crisp. This is an excellent original example of a very desirable .45/90 Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle with color casehardened frame.
