Excellent U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle

This is an excellent example of an original U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor rifle that was manufactured in 1887. The lock is marked with the Eagle Shield motif followed by "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the hammer. The breech is the correct low arch model marked "U.S./MODEL/1884". Pinned blade front sight and Buffington rear sight. The left rear of the barrel is marked with the "V/P/Eagle head/P" proof and inspector marks, with an "A" on the top. Blue finish with casehardened breechblock and upper tang. Three click tumbler and mounted with a one-piece stock with metal forend cap, two barrel bands, slotted button head cleaning rod and steel "U.S." marked buttplate without compartment. Sharp "SWP/1887" cartouche on the left wrist, a small "J" and circled script "P" on the underside behind the lower tang.

Condition: Excellent plus, unissued. The rifle retains 98% original blue finish with some muzzle wear. The buttplate has most of the blue with a bright area on the heel with 20% missing. The breechblock retains 99% vivid original case colors. The stock is excellent with a few scattered minor dings and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
