Excellent U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle with Bayonet

This is an excellent example of an original U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor rifle that was manufactured in 1886. The lock is marked with the Eagle Shield motif followed by "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the hammer. The breechblock is marked "U.S./MODEL/1873". Pinned blade front sight and "R" marked Buffington rear sight. The left rear of the barrel is marked with the "V/P/Eagle head" proof and inspector marks, with an "A" on top. Blue finish with casehardened breechblock and upper tang. Three click tumbler, lower arch breechblock and mounted with a one-piece oil stained walnut stock with metal forend cap, two barrel bands, slotted button head cleaning rod and steel "U.S." marked buttplate without compartment. "SWP/1886" cartouche on the left wrist and circled script "P" and "X" on the underside behind the lower tang. Complete with a "US" marked socket bayonet.

Condition: Excellent. The barrel retains 97% original blue finish with areas of smooth plum, some muzzle wear from the bayonet and a few scratches on the muzzle end. The breechblock retains 98% plus original bright case colors. The hammer and the lock plate retain 90% plus original blue. The trigger guard and lower tang retain 97% original blue finish. The stock is excellent with a few minor dings and handling marks. The cartouche is sharp and all markings are crisp and clear. The bayonet is excellent with 99% original blue finish, showing some small areas of minor oxidation and pitting on the edges.
