This is an excellent representative example of a U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1871 Rolling Block Rifle, as made on a royalty agreement with Remington in 1871 and 1872 with a total production of 10,000. The left side of the frame is marked "MODEL 1871, the right side with the eagle shield motif over "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / 1872" and the upper tang is marked with two line address/patent dates. The rifle is finished armory bright with a casehardened action. Square base front sight and adjustable folding leaf rear sight graduated to 900 yards. The rifle is fitted with a double stop cleaning rod with slotted tip, sling swivel mounted on the front of the trigger guard and a swivel on the forward barrel band. The rifle is mounted with a smooth full forearm with iron end cap and straight grip stock with a sharp "ESA" oval cartouche on the left wrist and carbine style buttplate marked "U.S." on the tang. Complete with a contemporary brown leather military sling.

Condition: Excellent. The once cleaned barrel has a smooth mottled silver gray patina. The receiver retains 85% of the original case colors with a smooth brown patina on the balance. The trigger guard has a smooth mottled gray and brownish patina and the buttplate has a smooth dark brown patina. The wood is excellent with nicely raised, feathered grain and overall a few minor dings and dents. The cartouche is clear and crisp. The action is excellent.
