Excellent Stevens No. 49 Walnut Hill Single Shot Target Rifle

The No. 49 target rifle was made from 1896 to 1916. The # 1 barrel is marked "J. STEVENS A. & T. CO./CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS. U.S.A." upside down on the right rear flat and "22. L.R." on the left rear. The matching serial number is marked on the lower tang and bottom of the barrel ahead of the forearm. Standard light scroll engraved receiver. Globe front sight, no provisions for a rear barrel sight and a short range tang mounted vernier peep sight. The barrel and hammer are finished blue with the remaining surfaces casehardened. The lever is the full loop type with double set triggers. Mounted with nicely figured, high grade checkered American walnut Schnabel forearm and Schuetzen style pistol grip stock with high comb, cheek piece, perch belly a casehardened Swiss style iron buttplate.

Condition: Excellent. The barrel retains 98% plus original blue finish with the balance having a smooth plum patina. The receiver retains 97% of the original bright case colors with some darken remains of a protective coat of varnish. The lever retains 75% original case colors, brightest in protected areas and also has areas of a darkened coat of protective varnish. The buttplate retains 80% original case colors with a smooth gray on the balance. The wood is fine. With the exception of a 5 1/2 inch by 1/8 inch splinter absent from the upper right front of the forearm, there are a few minor dents and scratches, and crisp checkering. The markings and engraving are crisp. The action is excellent.
