This is a nice example of an extremely rare "Zero Series" P.38 Pistol. This pistol is a Third Series with the standard firing pin and extractor. The left side of the slide is marked with the Walther banner followed by "P.38" and the serial number. The matching serial number is also found on the left side of the frame and front of the barrel lug. The right side of the slide is marked with two "eagle/359" proofs flanking the Nazi firing proof. The "eagle/359" proof is repeated on the left side of the frame and on almost all the parts. The left side of the barrel lug is marked with the bore diameter "8,83" and the locking block is marked "466" on the bottom and has the correct inspection marks on the sides. The pistol has the high polish blue finish and is fitted with black bakelite grips with checkered side and rear panels with a round lanyard ring on the left heel. An unusual feature is the "480 code" located inside both matching numbered grip panels; this code was only used by Walther from mid 1940 through October 1940 and was rarely found on "Zero Series" pistols. The magazine is marked with two "eagle/359" proofs on the lower spine and is numbered to another "0" Series pistol, (08166). These were the first of the military P.38s produced and approximately 13,714 were made.
BBL: 4 7/8 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 9 mm
Finish: blue
Grips: plastic
Serial Number: 05466
Condition: Near excellent. The pistol retains 90% of the original blue finish, showing some edge wear and the muzzle and high edges. There is some minor flaking on the slide and the front strap is a mix of thin original blue finish and smooth gray patina. Overall there are some scattered light scratches and a very small amount of pitting on the muzzle. Grips are very good, with a 1/2 inch x 3/4 inch chip on the upper rear right panel, otherwise a few minor scratches, light handling marks and crisp checkering. Action needs adjustment, hammer does not always hold a cock position. Markings are clear and crisp.
