These rifles were developed by J.P. Lindsay in 1863 with the obvious intent of increasing the fire power of the infantry soldier by having two successive shots in a single barrel. This necessitated two hammers arranged side-by-side to the rear of the bore with an enlarged firing chamber at the rear of the single barrel. There is a mechanism on the single trigger that ensures that the right hammer always fires first. Lindsay's patent actually covered the loading and firing of two charges in a single barrel. The top of the breech section of the barrel is marked "LINDSAY/PATENTED.OCT. 9.1860." There is "US" on the buttplate and two clear boxed "ADK" inspector cartouches on the stock. It is complete with a ramrod that has the tulip/cupped end. There were only about 1,000 of these Muskets manufactured in 1863 and 1864 under contract of the Army, making the Lindsay two shot Model 1863 rifle musket a very rare Civil War rifle.
