Excellent Late Production U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle with Sling

This is an excellent example of a unaltered late production Model 1884 Trapdoor rifle that includes an original leather sling. The left rear of the barrel is marked with the "V/P/eagle head", with a "P" below the marking and an "A" on the top of the barrel. The top of the breech block is marked "US/MODEL/1884". The lock is the correct late three click tumbler version that is marked with the American Eagle and "U.S./ SPRINGFIELD". Two piece trigger guard, buttplate without a trap, and long range Buffington rear sight adjustable for windage and elevation and a blade front sight with a late Model 1888 hood. The stock is the correct full length version marked with a boxed script "SWP" over "1889" cartouche on the left wrist and a circles script "P" behind the detachable metal pistol grip. The rifle is complete with a late pattern unmarked brown leather Trapdoor sling and the original cleaning rod. The right rear upper corner of the buttstock has a small brass numbered identification plate and it is reported that this rifle had been at St. John Military academy rifle at one time, but no documentation accompanies the rifle.

Excellent. The rifle retains 97% plus original blue finish with some wear and thinning on the and a mix of smooth gray patina and original blue finish on the buttplate. There are a few very rub marks on the top of the barrel behind the front barrel band. 95% plus original case colors remain which are starting to fade. The stock is also excellent with some scattered minor dents and handling marks, and signs of a very light old cleaning that has just removed the dark color. The sling is very good with some moderate flex cracking and minor wear, with a detached loop. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
