This is an example of 1 of only 3 Match Target pistols civilian sold during WWII. The pistol is U.S. marked, however was never shipped to the military, but a private citizen. The left rear of the barrel is marked "MATCH / target logo / TARGET", the left side of the frame is marked "THE WOODSMAN / U.S. PROPERTY" and the left side of the slide is marked "COLT AUTOMATIC / CAL..22 LONG RIFLE" followed by the Rampant Colt. The serial number is marked on the front strap and the upper front of the trigger guard is marked "e" over the Colt "VP" triangle proof, with "74" on the opposite. Pinned blade front and adjustable rear target sights, serrated trigger, blue colt marked magazine and fitted with checkered plastic extended grips with "COLT" over the Rampant Colt in a circle molded at the top. The accompanying factory letter verifies the serial number, caliber, 6 1/2" barrel, blue finish, grips as "Not Listed" and that it was shipped as 1 to an individual in Arlington, Va. On April 5, 1944. The pistol is complete with the original maroon hinged lid box numbered to the gun, manual, "Special Instructions" and "Shooting Suggestions" pamphlets, Woodsman and rear sight hanging tags, cleaning brush, waxed paper, and rear sight screwdriver.

Condition: Excellent plus. The revolver retains 99% original blue finish with some very slight muzzle and high edge wear and a small area of bright wear on the front strap. Overall there are a few scattered minor dings and handling marks. The grips are near new with a couple small dings on the lower edge. Some markings are highlighted in white, and all remain clear and crisp. Mechanically excellent. The box is good with some corner repairs, some cracks and minor staining. A majority of the end labels remain. An extremely nice, rare civilian sold U.S. marked First Series Colt Match Target pistol.
