This is an excellent example of one of 401 Lighting Rifles purchased by the San Francisco Police Department in 1898. The San Francisco Police Department was the only department to adopt the slide action rifle, which was not as popular or reliable as the lever action rifles of the day. These rifles were serial numbered in their own special range, SFP1 to SFP401. The "number" was stamped on the lower tang, with this particular rifle being "SFP 108". The two line address/patent dates is marked on the top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight and "44 Cal." at the breech. The Rampant Colt is on the left side of the receiver. D.W. King blade front and adjustable semi-buckhorn rear sights. Niter blue loading gate and trigger. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a steel crescent buttplate.
BBL: 26 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 44-40
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: SFP108
Condition: Excellent. The rifle retains 95% plus original blue finish, showing some discolored spots on the barrel, scattered light scratches, edge wear and handling marks. The wood is very good, with a small area of white residue on the wrist, mild scratches and some minor pressure dents and handling marks. Mechanically excellent. A superb example of the very desirable San Francisco Police Department Colt Medium Frame Lighting Rifle.
