Manufactured in 1958, Colt manufactured approximately 3,900 of these Buntline Specials in 17 years. The "Buntline Special" was named after a dime novelist named Ned Buntline who supposedly gave this long barrel revolver to Wyatt Earp. The story is suspected to be purely legend, however Colt decided to take advantage of the market and produced the 12" barreled Single Action Army revolver from 1957 to 1974. Standard one line address on top of the barrel and "COLT BUNTLINE SPECIAL .45" on the left side. The bottom of the barrel is marked with the stock number "BB2404" just ahead of the cylinder pin. Two line, three patent date marking on the left side of the frame followed by the Rampant Colt. The matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the frame and on the left side of the grip straps under the grips. One grip panel is numbered to another gun. The upper left front of the trigger guard is marked with the Colt "VP" triangle proof and "P" at the rear. Standard blade front and frame notch rear sights, casehardened frame, blue on the remaining parts and fitted with checkered Rampant Colt/American eagle relief grips.
