Excellent Civil War Second Model Maynard Breech Loading Carbine
Second Model Maynard breech loading carbine manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Company in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, 1863-1865. The carbine has a blued barrel and casehardened receiver, hammer, lever and buttplate. The low comb, black walnut, stock lacks the patch box found on First Model Carbines and has an oil finish. The barrel is fitted with a folding three-leaf rear sight. A sling bar and ring are attached to the left side of the receiver. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped: "EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTEE/MAY 27, 1851/DEC.6.1859" in three lines. The right side of the receiver is marked; "MANUFACTURED BY/MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS.". The serial number, "14032" is stamped on the lower receiver tang. A small Ordnance sub-inspection mark "A.J.N." is stamped on the left barrel flat. Single letter Ordnance sub-inspection marks are found on most components. Two script Ordnance final and sub-inspection marks in rectangular boxes are stamped on the left stock wrist. The Massachusetts Arms Co., manufactured about 22,022 Second Model Maynard Carbines during the Civil War. These carbines were issued to a number of Federal cavalry regiments; primarily in the western armies.
