Excellent 17th or The Duke of Cambridge's Lancers Officer's Czapka

This is a late Victorian era officer's cap of the 17th Lancers c. 1890. The skull and peak are black patent leather with gold lace around the waist and lower edge of the skull. The peak has gold purl in three bands. The mortar board top is white melton cloth with ridged sides and gold bullion cord crossing the top and descending the angled corners. There is a gold bullion plume boss with "VR" cypher supporting a white swan feather plume with a ring. The plate has a Victorian crown at the top over the Royal Arms of Great Britain with the skull badge of the 17th Lancers over a banner reading "SEVENTEENTH LANCERS" with four Crimean War battle honors surrounding it. The velvet backed gilt chin chain is suspended from two lion's head ear bosses. The front peak is lined with green skived leather, there is a natural color leather sweat band and a red silk lining with "HAWKES & Co." label.

Condition: Excellent, the patent leather shows minor wear. The mortar board top has some dark lines in between the ridges. The gold bullion cord has faded slightly. The plate has a bright appearance overall. The silver components have a dark aged patina. The sweat band and lining are excellent.
