European flintlock military musket converted to percussion with lock signed Neyse and barrel dated 1818 in approximately .75 caliber smoothbore. The musket has been reduced to 49” in length and the brass butt plate has been removed as was the Indian fashion as they made good hide scrapers. The metal surfaces show some light to slightly heavy pitting with the heavy pitting occurring at the firing areas of the breech and the stock shows restoration and refinishing long ago which is a shame as there is good wear at the belly of the stock from being carried on a saddle or across a horse which is also in Indian fashion. The gun may have been tacked an ornamented at one time and restored before Indian guns were appreciated as these brass mounted muskets were among the most traded arms to Indians because they were cheap and easy to get also the Indians loved brass. Gale Kennedy Historical West Collection. Est.: $400-$800.
